Jerry L. Nix, age 94, of Gainesville, Georgia, passed away Friday, December 7, 2024.
Private graveside services will be held at Alta Vista Cemetery.
Jerry was born May 28, 1930 in the New Holland Community but grew up in Gainesville Mill. He was the son of the late Wallace E. Nix and Mary Verdell (Philyaw) Nix.
Following graduation from high school, he proudly served in the United States Air Force. He purchased a service station in 1960 from Curtis Prickett at the corner of Green and Broad Streets. 6 years later he bought W.L. Keith's station on Sycamore Street. He was one of the last full-service stations when he closed in 2004.
Jerry had a church pew in front of his station to accommodate people waiting for their cars to be serviced. But it soon became like a "liars' bench" commonly found at the country stores where men gathered to talk politics and tell tales. He removed the pew, much to the gossipers dismay, which was then replaced by the gossipers own lawn chairs.
He served on the Hall County Board of Commissions running for one term in South Hall and 10 years later won the commission chair election. One of his most significant decisions was hiring his old friend Red Cantrell as public works director. As the Commission Chair.
His memories include the Gainesville Mill community, U.S. Air Force, firefighter, service station owner and county commissioner.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Christine (Wright) Nix in 2020; and his son, Jeff Nix.
He is survived by his brother and sister-in-law, Ray and Poochie Nix of Gainesville; sister, Ann and Boone Strickland of Gainesville; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Eddie and Brenda Wright of Lawrenceville; lifelong friend and business partner, Louie Griffin of Gainesville.

December 11, 2024

Jerry Nix became a friend when I went to work on Sycamore Street. He and his wife Christine became very close friends and when they adopted Jeff, I became his God Mother. We go back for many years and this relationship includes their family. Donnie and I went to visit Jerry approxiamatley 3 weeks ago at the home. He seemed happy and doing fine and looked well. This death became a shock even though we knew he was not well. Our thoughts and prayers are with Ray, Poochie, and all of the family including his brother-in-law and their family. We love you and pray for you all.
