Jerry W. Peveto, 85, of Nome, died Thursday, April 10, 2025. He was born on November 12, 1939, to Kathryn Harmon Peveto and Allen Peveto, in Orange. Following his mother's death, he was raised by "Aunt Mary" Eddleman Peveto.
A fourth-generation rice farmer, Jerry W. lived a life many men can only dream of-a talented athlete, a NFR champion rodeo cowboy, a respected farmer, and family man. This McLewis Community boy played college football at Texas A&M and East Texas State (now Texas A&M Commerce) before graduating from Sam Houston State in 1962. After teaching five years, he left the classroom for the rodeo arena, qualifying five times for the National Finals in Oklahoma City.
In 1972, he won the Finals in steer wrestling. But in 1973 following the death of his beloved older brother, Jerry returned to the farm to plant and harvest the rice crop for his brother's widow. He then purchased the farm, retiring in 2001. Jerry and his wife married in 1974 and made their home in Nome for the remainder of his life. He was the proud father of two loving sons.
All who ever met Jerry heard one of his many tales-most of which were true- despite an occasional embellishment for effect. This former teacher, rodeo cowboy, and farmer loved sharing these stories that were numbered by family members who had heard them all a time or two. But most of all, those who knew Jerry remember fondly a larger-than-life man of integrity, humility, and kindness. He loved his family and his wide network of friends. His faith in his Savior sustained him, especially during his last years.
Survivors include his wife, Cynthia Peveto; sons, Jason Menard and his wife, Leah, of Buda and Todd Peveto and his wife, Cassy, of Beaumont; brothers, Don Hubbard and his wife, Judy, of Orange and Charles Ray Peveto of Houston; grandchildren, Anna Potter of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Caleb Menard of Buda, and Ryan Reamy, Ross Reamy, and Russ Reamy; and great-grandchildren, Hadley Reamy, Ila Reamy, and Aliza Reamy, all of Beaumont.
He is preceded in death by his parents and Mary Eddleman Peveto and brothers, Flurry Joe Peveto and Perry Allen Peveto.
