Paul Jeremiah Proffitt, affectionately known as Jerry, passed away peacefully at the age of 86 on January 8, 2026, in Waxahachie, Texas. He was born on January 18, 1939, in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and spent much of his childhood in Borger, Texas.

Jerry earned his master’s degree from Southern Methodist University and devoted his professional life to a career in banking, where he was known for his strong work ethic and attention to detail.

Jerry had a lifelong love for adventure and independence. He especially enjoyed flying single-engine airplanes and riding motorcycles. He also loved old cars—particularly Chevy El Caminos—and never passed up good barbecue. Above all, Jerry cherished spending quiet time alone in prayer, talking with the Lord and finding peace in those moments of reflection.

Jerry was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Lisa Patman; his son, Noel Proffitt; and his son, Michael Leatherman.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Ida Mae; his daughter, Elda Newman, of Granbury, Texas, and her husband, Gary Newman; daughter, Traci Drake, and her husband, Cody Drake; grandchildren, Brandon Newman and Bethany Brown (husband, Chris Brown), Nathaniel Drake, Caleb Drake, Abigail Drake, Hannah Drake, Ethan Leatherman, and Jacob Leatherman; and great-grandchildren, Charlie Brown and Hudson Brown.

Jerry was married to Ida Mae, his sweetheart of 15 years. Together they made their home in Waxahachie, Texas, where they shared a close bond and many simple joys. Jerry and Ida Mae enjoyed going to gun shows and antique shows, as well as spending time with friends and family. Their marriage was marked by companionship, shared faith, and deep affection.

A man of faith, Jerry trusted in the promises of eternal life through Jesus Christ. His family takes comfort in knowing he is now at peace and in the presence of his Lord and Savior.
