Jerry Ray Saylor

Jerry Ray Saylor was born on November 5, 1950, in Des Moines, Iowa, the son of Donald Franklin Saylor, Sr. and Roberta Jean (Pierson) Saylor. He lived a vibrant life marked by a commitment to his family, community, and diverse career pursuits. Jerry was a proud member of the Knoxville High School Class of 1968 and continued his education at the University of Northern Iowa, where he not only studied but also showcased his athleticism playing football. Jerry was united in marriage to Mary Lenora Pearson on April 4, 1970 at the Regular Baptist Church in Knoxville.

Throughout his career, Jerry demonstrated versatility and entrepreneurial spirit as a self-employed individual. His broad range of work included construction, tree cutting, truck driving, and property management, as well as owning and operating Hickory Ridge Campground and a carpet cleaning business, Rapid Dry Carpet Cleaning.

A deeply committed member of his community, Jerry was extensively involved in the Regular Baptist Church. He was known for his generosity, often ensuring that those in need were assisted. He had a propensity for helping others, whether it was stopping to aid a motorist in distress or treating first responders to a meal or coffee whenever the opportunity arose.

Jerry's adventurous spirit was evident in his various hobbies and interests. He enjoyed flying and participated in numerous activities, including flying of all kinds, horseback riding, downhill skiing, wrestling, and racquetball. His enthusiasm for sports continued with pursuits like pickleball and participation in the RAGBRAI cycling event. He also cherished moments spent with his emotional support dog, Sushi, taking him for rides on his three-wheel bike.

Because of his zest for life, Jerry had his share of adventures that led to mishaps, including a notable incident where he broke his neck while riding a donkey. Known for his resilience, it was uncommon for him not to have bruises or scrapes from various escapades—be it a tractor mishap, a fall from a ladder, or an unexpected glider crash into trees.

Jerry passed away November 11, 2025 at his home, in West Des Moines, Iowa, at the age of 75 years.

Jerry is preceded in death by his father, Donald Franklin Saylor, Sr.; his mother, Roberta Jean Saylor, and his brother, Donald Franklin Saylor, Jr.

Family provided him with immense joy. He is survived by his beloved wife, Mary Lenora; his daughter, Christina Scott, and son-in-law, Brent Scott; his brother, Rodney Saylor, and sister-in-law, Charlotte Saylor; along with four cherished grandchildren: Liam M. Conlon, Brady Conlon, Troy Scott, and Rachel Scott, nephew, Mike Saylor and his wife Stephanie, great nieces Courtney and Alyssa and many other family members and friends.
