Gerald W. Schieffer was born on April 23, 1948, to the proud parents of Lawrence and Helen (Goeden) Schieffer. Jerry was born and raised on the family farm near Crofton, Nebraska. Jerry attended grade school at the Catholic school in Constance, Nebraska. He attended high school in Crofton, Nebraska.
After graduating from high school in 1966, Jerry attended Southern State Teacher's college in Springfield, South Dakota. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in carpentry. After graduation, Jerry worked for Robert Burns Lumber in Mitchell, SD.
Jerry and Carol Ann Ells were married on June 6, 1970, and they made their home in Mitchell, South Dakota. His new wife was teaching at the Mitchell Area Vocational Technical School, and Jerry continued working at Robert Burns Lumber Company for a short time. And that is when his teaching career began! He started his first teaching job in the carpentry department at Southern State College where he graduated from. And after two years, Jerry started teaching at the Mitchell Area Vocational Technical School, where he taught for 32 years, and became the department head of the building construction program, and retired in 2004.
Jerry was a perfectionist... to say the least. In 1991, we purchased the Campbell 1880 Farmstead from Carol Ann's parents. And then the labor of love began. We have restored the entire 1880 farmstead, except for three small buildings. And, at the present we have thoroughly enjoyed living the "good ol life" of the 1880 traditions.
Jerry will be thoroughly missed by many, many who loved him, including Carol Ann. Jerry was such a role model for anyone to follow. He used and lived the word "real" with every aspect of his life. Jerry was a loving man, not just by Carol Ann, but anyone who knew him. He cherished family, friends, and life. Jerry was a man of extreme perfection. Because if you did not do it right, you did it over until perfection was acquired. As we were restoring 1880 farmstead, we never ever had an argument... because if we did, we would never have ever completed much, much less an entire farmstead.
Jerry is survived by his wife Carol Ann, his oldest brother, Merle (Sandy), sister Elaine (Charlie), brother Vernon (Norma), brother Rod (Janice), sister Jean Marie (Darrell), and sister Marlene (Randy) Knight, and many nephews and nieces. Jerry is preceded in death by his parents.
