Jerry Simpson Obituary
Jerry Simpson passed away on January 31, 2024, after a battle with cancer.
Jerry had relentless enthusiasm for life and for his family. Born November 15th, 1957, to James Dewey (Jim) Simpson and Martha Pauline (Dutchie) Simpson, he grew up in Harrison, Ohio, where he enjoyed scouting and baseball. As a young adult Jerry married his next-door neighbor Sherry, whom he remained deeply in love with for the next 41 years. Jerry and Sherry raised three sons and built their dream house on top of a beautiful hill in the woods that, once upon a time, belonged to his grandmother. The house started with a vision for a pool table and by the end included a spiral staircase and a two-story greenhouse filled with banana trees. It also had a ping pong table and pinball machine which made it the perfect place for parties. (His sons would like to take this opportunity to come clean and admit that there were possibly more parties than he knew about.)
Jerry threw himself wholeheartedly into everything he did, especially his hobbies, which he shared with Sherry. For years Jerry enjoyed the sport of bowling and many family vacations revolved around the American Bowling Championship. At his peak he bowled a perfect game and an 857 series. He then decided to quit bowling to take up skiing. Jerry volunteered on the ski patrol at Perfect North Slopes for 21 years and became an avid outdoors sports enthusiast. He enjoyed camping, hiking, cycling and more and for many years on his birthday he rode 100 miles. His favorite ride of all time was on the Indy 500 racetrack where he had fond memories of visiting the Indy 500 with his Dad.
Jerry loved trying new varieties of beer and he and Sherry even moved to Bend, Oregon for a time where he was close to the Deschutes Brewery. He took the tasting tour many times and made lifelong friends while exploring the ski slopes and hiking trails around the Pacific Northwest.
Jerry loved the sport of Adventure Racing where he participated in many events over a 15 year time period sometimes as a racer, often as a volunteer.
Jerry made friends wherever he went and always wore a Hawaiian shirt on Fridays because he lived for the weekend.
Jerry deeply loved his family - his sisters Luanne Lee (Eric) and Leanne Reis, his three boys Jason Gulley (Patti Spellman), Jamie Gulley (Robyn Gulley), and Jordan Simpson (Candise Simpson) and his big extended family. His six granddaughters, Piper, Maelyn, Lyla, Emma, Marlo and Norah and two grand-dogs, Peacock and Olsen, brought him endless joy. He will be dearly missed by all of us.
Visitation will be held at Brater Winter Funeral Home, 201 S. Vine Street, Harrison, OH 45030 on Sunday, February 4, 2024, from 1 pm until the service at 3 pm with Pastor Mark Garrett officiating.
Memorials in Jerry's memory may be made to Legacy Christian Church to help those in need in the community. A funeral home representative will be available to assist during the services on Sunday. If you are unable to attend then you can mail your donation to the funeral home and they will notify family and forward to the church.
