Jerry Smith Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Pulliam Funeral Home - Oblong on Dec. 22, 2025.
Our lives are forever changed with the passing of Jerry Dean Smith, 90, of Oblong, IL, on December 20, 2025. A devoted husband, father, Opa, and veteran, Jerry lived a life marked by strength, humility, and unwavering dedication to his family.
Jerry was born on January 30,1935, to Melrie and Vern Smith in Oblong. On November 22,1960, he married Edith Berger, the love of his life, in Zerf, Germany. He honorably served for 22 years in the U.S. Army and upon retirement was employed with the Newton Power Plant and Briggs Manufacturing. Although a man of few words, his actions spoke volumes. Whether it was in his career, his friendships, or his role as a husband, father and Opa, Jerry led by example, showing those around him what it meant to live with integrity, resilience, and love.
Jerry's legacy will live on in his daughters and son-in law Karin Smith and Sandy and Ed Lex, all of Springfield, IL. His beloved grandchildren Adam, Lydia, Jared, and Meredith, all of St. Louis, MO, will cherish the memories of his gentle wisdom, humor and quiet presence. He will also be deeply missed by his brother and sister-in law Paul and Diana Smith of Mitchell, IN, his niece Edith Rommelfanger of Germany, as well as several other nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents, wife, sister Sandra, and brothers and sisters-in-law Bob and Vevalee Smith and Mike and Barbara Smith.
A private family grave-side service will be held. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Oblong Food Pantry.

Dear Karin and Sandy
Your dad was an usher at my wedding. He told me that he carried a picture of my family with him all the 22 years he was in service. I didn't know this till he gave us a card at our 55th anniversary, it had the picture in it and telling us about it. " remember that when someone we love becomes a memory the memory becomes a treasure"
