Jerry Lee Woodard of Independence, Mo 76, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on October 24, 2025. Cremation is planned with a celebration of Jerry’s life to be held from 9:30-10:30 a.m., Saturday November 8 followed by a brief service, then burial with full military honors at the Oak Ridge Memory Gardens. The family will then host a reception at the American Legion Post #21 16701 E. US Highway 40, Independence MO 64055 for those who can attend.

He was born on February 18, 1949 in Des Moines, Iowa and lived a life defined by hard work and a love for the open road.

In 1969 Jerry joined the United States Army and proudly served his country in the Vietnam war. After returning home, he started a lifelong career on the open road. It began by driving across the country for Consolidated Freightways until 1979 when he turned his passion, experience and strong work ethic into his own trucking business, which he successfully operated until his retirement in 2009.

Jerry loved auto racing, building hot rods and restoring classic cars, a pastime that reflected his skill and appreciation for craftsmanship. He also treasured time spent at the lake with family and friends where countless memories were made over the years.

Jerry is survived by his loving wife, Virginia Woodard; three children, Shawn (Kate) McDonald of Kansas City, Missouri, Shannon McDonald of Independence, Missouri and Heather (Matt) Hurd of Shawnee, Kansas; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

His legacy will live on in the lives he touched and the stories his loved ones will continue to share.

In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made in honor of Jerry by supporting local Veteran's. VETBUILT Customs, VETBUILT.org,Kansas City, MO. (Custom and classic car restoration) or to Veterans Community Project (VCP), VCP.org, Kansas City, MO. (provides housing and supportive services)
