Published by Legacy on Mar. 10, 2025.
Jesse Cordell Back, born on February 14, 1934, in Blackey Kentucky passed away peacefully on February 21, 2025, in Louisville, Kentucky. He was the beloved son of Troy and Laura Back. Jay, as he was affectionately known, was a shining light in the lives of all who had the privilege of knowing him. His journey on this earth was one marked by love, compassion, and unwavering faith in God. His passing has left a void in the hearts of his family, friends, and many more whose lives were touched by him. We ask that you remember Jay for the way he lived his life, and for the profound impact it had on the lives of those who had the pleasure of knowing him. Jay is survived by his loving wife of 68 years, Velma Back and sisters, Francis Hampton and Mable Francis both of Dayton Ohio. His brother, John Wayne Back of Hazard Kentucky. He also leaves behind his son and daughter-in-law, Steve and Lisa Back of Austin Texas. As well as grandchildren, Lauren and Ryan Back also of Austin Texas. He was predeceased by his sister June Pavka. After his graduation from Stuart Robinson High School, Jay joined the Navy for 4 years before returning to Kentucky and earned his bachelor's degree in education from the University of Louisville. After teaching for a few years, he took a position within the Federal Government where he had a successful career for over 30 years before retiring in 1994. Jay found great joy in his family and friends and enjoyed exercise, being outdoors and watching sports. Those who knew Jay will remember him for his infectious smile and overwhelming laughter, his deep-rooted faith in Jesus, and his unwavering commitment to service and kindness to everyone he encountered. He had a rare gift for making others smile and laugh, leaving a lasting impact on all who crossed his path. A celebration of Life service to honor and remember Jay will be held on April 4, 2025, at 3pm at the Fern Creek Christian Church located at (9419 Seatonville Rd., Louisville, KY 40291.) A reception at the church will immediately follow the service. His ashes will be Interred at Kentucky Veterans Cemetery Central, in Fort Knox Kentucky. Although Jay's physical presence may no longer grace our lives, his spirit will continue to inspire and uplift us. May his memory be a blessing and may we carry forth his legacy of love and compassion in all that we do.
