Jessica “Jess” Lynn Rice, 43, of New Bern, North Carolina, passed away after a courageous battle against breast cancer on Sunday, September 7, 2025, at her home surrounded by her family.
Jess was born on December 15, 1981, in Warren, Ohio, to the late William Edward Rice and her mother, Sharon Elaine Duigou. From a young age, Jess had a deep love for animals and the outdoors. She enjoyed camping, fishing, and spending time in nature. Her childhood was full of accomplishments, including her time in 4-H, where she earned many awards for horsemanship, and in high school, where she proudly participated in JROTC.
Jess was creative and full of life, she loved to draw and color, finding joy in her art. She was also the life of the party, someone who brought laughter and fun energy wherever she went. Her kind heart and outgoing personality meant she never met a stranger, and those around her will always remember her warmth and sense of humor. Jess’s mom lovingly referred to her as “Happy Go Wacky”. May Jess be remembered for her bright light and the love she poured into her family and friends.
Those remaining to cherish her memory are her mother, Sharon Elaine Duigou of the home; stepfather, Joseph Anthony Brooking of the home; sons, Jonathan Phillip Michael Rice of New Bern, NC, Jaxon Edward Ruth of New Bern, NC; sisters, Angel Elaine Pedro of Havelock, NC, Gwen Carol Rice-Smith of New Bern, NC, Stephanie Rae Wilmoth (Larry) of Warren, OH; brother, William Edward Rice II of Girard, OH; stepsister, Brandy Wood of Greenwood, IN; stepbrothers, Joshua Brooking of Bedford, IN, Jeremy Brooking of Goose Creek, SC; and 15 loving nieces and nephews.
In addition to her father, Jess was preceded in death by her loving partner, John M. Ruth Jr.; brother Keith Lawrence Rice; her maternal and paternal grandparents.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the National Breast Cancer Foundation, 7460 Warren Pkwy #150, Frisco, TX 75034.
