Jill Smachetti Obituary
Jill Smachetti, 70, of Southport, NC (formerly of Glastonbury, CT) passed away suddenly on September 2, 2025. A devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, Jill touched countless lives with her humor, warmth, and unwavering loyalty.
Born on March 16, 1955 in Hartford, CT to Beatrice and Frank Weir, Jill was the heartbeat of her family from a young age. She graduated from Manchester High School in 1973 and went to Eastern Connecticut State College to earn her BA in early childhood education.
Jill's family was the center of her universe. She was the beloved wife of Daniel Smachetti, the devoted mother to Dina Nelson (with husband RJ) of Leland, NC, Katelyn Smachetti (with partner Steve Velasquez) of Windsor Locks, CT. Jill's joy expanded with the recent arrival of her precious granddaughter Ryder Mae Nelson in March 2025. She also held a very unique and special bond with her sisters, Melody Ryan (with husband Paul) and Robin Weir.
In her earlier days Jill had a rewarding career as a contract manager at Scan Optics, Gerber Garment, and TRC. She gave this career up to become a phenomenal mom. As her girls got older, she channeled her compassionate spirit and enthusiasm for nurturing young minds by having a rewarding career as a preschool teacher at Creative Nursery School in Glastonbury CT and continued this passion in her new beloved community in Southport NC as a substitute teacher at A Nesting Place (affiliated with Trinity Church). She also enjoyed a few years as a receptionist at the law firm BPS Lawyers in Glastonbury.
A natural connector, Jill filled her days with fun and fellowship. She deeply loved being with her very close friends from her Glastonbury and Southport communities. She also loved staying in touch with her special close friends from her Manchester high school days and enjoyed being on the high school reunion committee. Her sense of humor and steadfast devotion made her an irreplaceable presence to her family and friends. She was an avid reader and loved to keep active, swimming laps and taking walks with friends which helped her forge lasting friendships along the way.
Arrangements to celebrate Jill's remarkable life will be made at a later date.
In the meantime, her family knows that words cannot fully express how deeply she will be missed. Jill Smachetti was a true force of nature, a woman whose passion for those she loved was unmatched, and who leaves a void impossible to fill. She will be missed more than words can convey.
