James "Jim" Lewis Bird, Jr, 88, of Cumming, GA passed away peacefully on November 2, 2025. Many residents of Cumming, GA may know him as the old guy speeding all over town in his Anniversary Edition white Corvette!
Jim was born on June 1, 1937 in Bethune, SC, to James Lewis Bird and Dorothy Spencer Bird. He went to college at Georgia Tech where he was a member of the PI KAPPA ALPHA fraternity. While attending college he met many lifelong friends and the young woman, Helen Kay Kirk, that he would go on to share 41 wonderful years of marriage with. He graduated from GA Tech with a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Management in 1961.
Jim spent two years in the US Army at the Atlanta, GA base off of Ponce De Leon Rd, now known as Ponce City Market.
Jim went to work for Sloan Paper Company after college. He began his career as a paper salesman and eventually became an executive with the company, retiring after over 30 years. He then went on to take over Wilco Printing in Cumming, GA, and was known in town not only for his quality printing, but his unmatched customer service and love for people.
A founding member of Pilgrimage Presbyterian Church in Lilburn, GA, Jim later became a member of Deer Creek Shores Presbyterian Church in Cumming.
Jim loved people. He loved his family and friends dearly, and never met a stranger. He had a passion for cars and boats, and enjoyed spending time with family and friends on Lake Lanier in Cumming and in Gulf Shores, AL. He loved watching sports (including his GA Tech Yellow Jackets, the Atlanta Braves, and the ATL Falcons) and was an avid golfer.
Jim is survived by sons James L. Bird III, and David C. Bird (Danielle); daughter Nancy Anderson-Spencer (Wendy); grandchildren Josh Bird, Christian Bird, Amanda Bird, Christian Woodall (Jordan), and Dalton Bird; great-granddaughter Sophia Bird; brother Richard Bird; Cousin Speight Bird; and many nieces and nephews.
Jim was joyfully greeted in heaven by his beloved wife Kay Kirk Bird; his parents James Lewis Bird and Dorothy Spencer Bird; sister Dorothy Elizabeth Bird; and cherished daughter-in-law Sheila Bird.
Visitation will be held from 12p-2p on Friday, November 7 at McDonald Family Funeral Home in Cumming, GA, with Funeral Service to follow at 2p with Keith Ashley officiating. Interment will be in Sawnee View Gardens after the service.
