"Jergens!" (meaning, "Jennings!") "Why I remember working on a new invention with Alex Bell! He said he was going to call it the Phone-A-Tell. I said I don't like it -- just doesn't have a ring to it!"
I was in awe of Jim from the moment I met him. I was hired to sit in his chair at the agency and "keep jobs moving" while he climbed Mt. Everest. He told me that he thought he was coming back and, "Just don't take my job!".
My best moments of my whole career were with Jim -- watching he and Bill Jennings go at it across the hall from each other. "The Little Tush Hogs are going to win tonight Jergens!". The first time I can remember actually rolling in the floor laughing were outside his office -- he was so gifted. With the stroke of a pen he could change a serious picture of Marge Thatcher into a comical statement (meme). He used Mac Paint like a master -- one pixel at a time.
His unending cheerleading and support of the CJRW Marquis De Sade Soccer team -- using Coach Jennings as fodder -- using a new medium... something called "e-mail"... genius.
Relentless satire drawings of Cheri Peden, Spencer May and the Bus Stop at Spencers Drug Store... kept us all going. He even drew me once -- it's framed -- a prized possession.
I wish I could have told him how much I wanted to be him. So sad to lose this man through the years but part of me will always be him and people will like that part of me.
Love,
Mark
