Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, May 20, 2025, at 10:00 AM at the United Methodist Church in Broken Bow, NE. Burial will follow in the Broken Bow Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Jim Millsap Memorial to be given to the Berwyn Scholarship Fund. A visitation will be held on Monday, May 19th, with the family greeting from 5:00 to 7:00 PM at Govier Brothers Mortuary. Govier Brothers Mortuary is in charge of arrangements. Online remembrance or words of encouragement may be left at www.govierbrothers.com Memorials may be made to the family for future designation.
James (Jim) Edward Millsap, son of J. Merlin and Helen Fern Millsap, was born on June 10, 1934, 17 miles northwest of Sargent, NE. He passed away on May 16, 2025, at Brookstone View in Broken Bow, NE at the age of 90.
In 1936 the family moved to the Somerford community, then to Dry Valley in 1938. He attended grade school at Dry Valley until they moved to a farm east of Berwyn, NE in March of 1948. Jim graduated from the eighth grade and completed grades 9-10 at Berwyn. When Berwyn High School closed, he continued his education at Broken Bow and graduated in 1952.
He worked with his dad on the family farm, until March 1954, when he joined the United States Army. He attended basic training at Ft. Leonard Wood, MO, later being sent to Ft. Belvoir, VA. Jim spent one year in Munich, Germany, receiving his honorable discharge in February 1956.
Jim was married to Marceil F. Christensen on November 25, 1956, in Broken Bow, NE. Jim and Marceil, with the help of Jim’s dad, built their home on the farm east of Berwyn, raising their family and living there over 60 years. They had three children Cheri Lynn, Kristi Kay, and Dean Lee. He farmed and fed cattle until semi-retiring in 1997.
Jim joined the Berwyn United Methodist Church in 1948, a faithful member serving as Lay Leader and was on various committees. When the Berwyn church closed in 2000, he transferred his membership to the Broken Bow United Methodist Church attending church and Sunday school regularly.
He was a member of the Custer County Farm Bureau. While on the Board of Directors, he held several offices and served on several committees. He served on the Berwyn School Board for 12 years and on the Custer County Zoning Commission. He and his wife Marceil were actively involved in the Custer Couples group.
Jim enjoyed life to the fullest, was content in any circumstance, and could brighten anyone’s day with a smile, words of encouragement and a hug. He loved the Lord, loved his family, and looked forward to what was next.
Jim is survived by his children Cheri Berggren (Erik) of Topeka, KS, Kristi Schopp (Todd) of Lincoln, NE, Dean Millsap (Michelle) of Berwyn, NE. Nine grandchildren: Kensy Byers (Bryant), Destri Millsap (Jordan), Quinton Berggren (Jami), Shaley Miller (Dustin), Taylor Alejos (Brock), Jacy Millsap, Kaden Schopp, April Pearson, and Tannah Schopp. Seven great grandchildren: Becket, Porter, Jacob, Ryker, Everly, Wyn, and Lydia. Sister Donna Jambor (Larry) of Denton, TX stepsister Kathleen Petersen (Lloyd) of Littleton, CO, stepbrother Joe Bendowsky of Wichita, KS, and many relatives and friends.
Jim was proceeded in death by his parents, stepmother Wilma Millsap, wife Marceil, three brothers-in-law and three sisters-in-law.
