Jim Spann, 73, passed away peacefully on October 15, 2025 at his home surrounded by his loving family. Jim was born in Columbia, SC on April 4, 1952, the youngest son to the late Samuel Robert Spann, Sr. and Louise Howard Ervin Spann. The Spann family later moved to Myrtle Beach, SC in 1957.
He was a proud graduate of Myrtle Beach High School, and later attended Clemson University, the University of South Carolina and Coastal Carolina University playing his favorite sport of basketball at each of those stops. Jim followed in his father's and brother's footsteps, working at Spann Roofing until his retirement in 2015. He met countless people during his time at Spann Roofing, many of who he would keep up with long after his retirement. Jim loved flounder fishing in the creeks of Murrells Inlet, catching and cleaning crabs, hanging out at the "point" on a summer afternoon or watching any ball game he could find on the TV. He especially loved following his Clemson Tigers and Atlanta Braves, watching every game win or lose.
Jim is survived by his wife, Alice McIntosh Spann of Murrells Inlet, his son James (Jimbo) McFadden Spann, IV and wife Byerly of Murrells Inlet, his grandchildren, James McFadden Spann, V and Robert Cale Spann of Murrells Inlet, his sister Louise Spann Smith of Myrtle Beach, his sister Ginny Spann Merritt and her husband Jimmy of Myrtle Beach, his brother Samuel (Sammy) Robert Spann, Jr. of Murrells Inlet, his stepsister Jane Mothershead Jarvis and husband Jimmy of Myrtle Beach, his stepsister Yvonne Mothershead Wade and husband Jim of Atlanta, and many nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank all of Jim's friends and extended family, both near and far, that have reached out to check on him and visited him over the last few months. Also, the family is forever grateful to Jim's caregiver for the last 9 years, Gina Kersey. Her dedication and commitment to his well-being will never be forgotten by all of those who loved him.
Memorial donations may be made to the IPTAY Scholarship Fund (864-656-2115 / P.O. Box 1529, Clemson, SC 29633) or to CCA South Carolina (803-865-4164 / 3021-10 McNaughton Drive, Columbia, SC 29223).
