James Roy Deaton 'Jimmy', 73, loving husband, father and PaPa of Mt. Gilead, passed away Wednesday, August 6, 2025 at Haven Hospice in Rockingham.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, August 9, 2025 at Zion United Methodist Church in Mt. Gilead, (398 Zion Church Road, Mount Gilead, NC 27306). Pastor Frank Thompson, Pastor Chip McAulay Rev. Michael Williams will officiate and interment will follow in the church cemetery.

Jimmy was born on July 11, 1952 in Troy, NC. After the death of his father, Roy Lee Deaton, he was raised by the late David and Eunice Nichols McKinnon.

Jimmy owned and operated Deaton Inventory Service until retirement where he owned and worked at AJ's Guns and Ammo. He met and loved all of his customers through the years. Jimmy enjoyed fishing and was an avid bass fisherman. He fished alongside his best friends for decades. He was known to his children and grandchildren as 'PaPa Jimmy.'

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his sister, Catherine Lamonds; and nephew, Christopher Deaton; and beloved dog, Dixie.

He is survived by his loving wife of 17 years, Angela McRae Deaton of the home; three children: Eric Deaton of SC, Cassie Deaton (Derik Williams II) of Whiteville, NC, and Ashley Smith (Marshall) of Clayton NC; five granddaughters: Haleigh Jackson, Juliana Jackson, Breckin Williams, Sophia Smith, and Adalynn Smith; brother: David 'Pete' Deaton (Pat) of Mt. Gilead; His In-laws, Teddy and Pat McRae; special friend Rachelle Rossignol and foster children; and his loving golden retriever, Milo, who helped keep him company in his final days.

The family requests memorials to be made to Hospice Haven : 1119 HWY US-1 N., Rockingham NC, 28379.
