Jimmy Dexter Smith, 82, passed away peacefully on Thursday, October 9, 2025, at his home surrounded by his loving family.
Jimmy was born in Wayne County on November 21, 1942, to the late Paul Guy Smith and Ethel Lane Smith. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter-in-law, Kathy Smith, and his brother, Nick Smith.
Jimmy retired as a finance officer with the O'Berry Center after many years of dedicated service. A devoted member of Spring Hill Original Free Will Baptist Church, Jimmy's faith was the cornerstone of his life. He enjoyed fishing, gardening, and sharing the fruits of his labor with friends and neighbors. He also loved dancing and traveling with his beloved wife, Mary, creating many cherished memories together.
The family will receive friends on Saturday, October 11, 2025, from 2:00 – 3:00 p.m. at Spring Hill Original Free Will Baptist Church, followed by a service of remembrance at 3:00 p.m. in the sanctuary with Pastor Al Warrick officiating. Interment will follow on Monday, October 13, 2025, at 2:00 p.m. in Wayne Memorial Park.
Jimmy is survived by his wife of 43 years, Mary Smith; sons, Mark Randall Smith of Grantham and Christopher Scott Smith and wife, Kimberly, of Mount Olive; grandchildren, Austin Smith and wife, Bailey, Cody Smith, Ailee Smith, Annalee Smith, and Colt Smith; and great-grandchildren, Easton Smith and Barrett Smith. He is also survived by his step-children, Tammy Barnes, Susan Whitman and husband, Randy, and Jeffrey Turbeville.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Jimmy's memory to Spring Hill Original Free Will Baptist Church, 2127 U.S. Hwy 70 West, Goldsboro, NC 27530.
