Jimmy Wayne McLaughlin passed away peacefully at home in Hueytown, AL on September 8, 2025 at the age of 78. A devout Christian, devoted husband, loving father and grandfather, Jimmy lived a life of service, always prioritizing the well-being of others. His humility, empathy, and unending gratitude left a lasting impression on anyone blessed enough to know him.
Jimmy was a faithful husband, who was preceded in death by his best friend and wife of 38 years, Carol. Together they raised a family based on strong Christian values and unconditional love. As a father and grandfather, “Pa” never shied away from showing his love through hugs and never failed to tell his family how much he loved them and how proud he was of them. His stories, life lessons, advice, and affection will always be cherished and remembered.
Jimmy attended the University of Alabama and graduated in 1969 with a degree in Business. He worked for Pullman Standard in Bessemer out of college, before being hired at Alabama Gas Corporation. He served in various positions in Human Resources at Alagasco before becoming the Director of Compensation and Employment. He retired from Alagasco/Energen Corporation in 2002 after 20 years of service.
Jimmy was preceded in death by his parents, Kenneth Arthur McLaughlin and Tera Mae McLaughlin, his brother, John Kenneth McLaughlin, his wife, Carol Matthews McLaughlin, and his granddaughter, Angel McLaughlin. He is survived by his three children, Patrick Wayne McLaughlin (Mamie), Amy McLaughlin Smithey (David), and Lucas Daniel McLaughlin (Kristi) and his six grandchildren, Madison Marie McLaughlin (Pat), Laren Grace Smithey, Matthew Nicholas Smithey, and Charles Arthur Smithey (Amy), and Madelynn Mae McLaughlin and Alexander Daniel McLaughlin (Luke). He is also survived by his two sisters in law, Judy Cornett McLaughlin and Gail Matthews Dyer (Richard), along with many beloved nephews and nieces.
A graveside service honoring the life and legacy of Jimmy Wayne McLaughlin will be held at Memory Hill Gardens Cemetery, 2200 Skyland Boulevard, Tuscaloosa, Alabama, with Magnolia Chapel Funeral Home directing, on Tuesday, September 16, 2025 at 11 am. Don Wheeler, an elder and family friend from Central Church of Christ, and Steve Castleman, an elder and family friend from Homewood Church of Christ, will be officiating. Flowers are welcome, or visit homewoodchurch.org/give where a donation may be made in Jimmy’s name to Homewood Church of Christ Missions for the construction of a home in his name in Honduras.
Jimmy was a selfless, kind-hearted gentleman who brought joy to the lives of everyone who knew him. He was an outspoken believer in our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, and his love for God was evident in how he lived his life in service to others. His legacy will live on in the lives of his family and the countless people touched by his gentle presence. We rejoice in the knowledge that he is at peace with the Lord and his beloved Carol in Heaven.
