Jimmy Wingate Obituary

Published by Eternity Funeral Homes & Crematory - Jacksonville on Jun. 12, 2018.
Jimmy Ray Wingate, 73 of Fernandina Beach, Florida passed away on the morning of Tuesday, June 12th, 2018 at Baptist Medical Center in Jacksonville, Florida. Ray, Jr. as he was affectionately known to family and friends had a closeness to nature, fond of hunting and fishing, cars and racing; he was a proclaimed country boy who enjoyed getting dirt on his hands and feet and disliked formality. Mischief and mayhem followed Ray wherever he went, though he lead with a strong will and a stronger heart, despite a long-time battle with a congenital heart condition. He was a proud veteran of the U.S. Army, having served overseas in Vietnam. Upon his return found his way to Amelia Island, where he made it his home for more than 45 years. He was a long-time employee of ITT Rayonier, where he worked for over 30 years. Ray was a dedicated member of several clubs and organizations, including Vietnam Vets of America, the American Legion, and recently the "Ole Farts Club," where he'd meet for breakfast at the local Krystal's. Ray is survived by his eldest daughter Nicole; his youngest daughter Meghan; siblings Karen Creal of Huntsville, Alabama; Jack Wingate of Birmingham, Alabama; younger half-siblings: Theresa Morgan of Jacksonville, Donna Milks and Paul Milks both of Orlando; step-brothers Mike Wingate of Orange Park and Don Wingate of Vidalia, Georgia; and step-mother Patricia Wingate of Fleming Island. He was the son of Raymond Wingate and Jimmie Wilson Cooper both of whom preceded him in death. Ray leaves behind a legacy of friendship and generosity felt by all who knew him. Memorial Services will be held at Jacksonville National Cemetery. Services to be held on July 6th at 10:00 a.m., and will end around 11:00 a.m.

My dad enjoyed meeting new people, and would treat every person he met with the same warmth and familiarity as he did with friends he had his whole life. That's who he was.. The man who walked over to every person in the room asking you how you were, and never let on how bad a day he may have been having. That's not to say he didn't have a temper. He was notorious for it, but later in life he realized how much he was missing by not focusing the good things rather than the bad. He was always a good man, but he became an even better man as a grew older. He was my father, but he was my confidant and my best friend. Not many people can say that, and I feel lucky for being given that gift. I love you daddy!
