Joan Bailey Obituary

Our beloved mother, Joan Moyers Bailey, passed away peacefully on December 2, 2025, at the age of 98, with her children by her side.
Born in 1927 in Harrisonburg, VA, to Herbert and Kathleen Moyers, she grew up in New Market, VA, and attended Madison College, then moved to RPI (VCU), where she earned her degree in Education. After marrying, she settled in Northern Virginia, where she devoted herself to raising her family and building a warm and welcoming home.
Throughout her life, Joan was known for her quiet strength, her generosity of spirit, and the easy, luminous smile she shared with everyone she met. She began her career as an educator, but her greatest joy—and her proudest role—was being a loving mother to her son and daughter, a devoted grandmother to her five grandchildren, and an adoring great-grandmother to her nine great-grandchildren.
A lifelong reader, Joan began each morning with the Washington Post over breakfast and often ended her evenings with a good book—habits that kept her curious, thoughtful, and engaged with the world around her. She also cherished the friendships she made playing bridge with her regular group at Lansdowne Woods, where she lived after moving from the family home in McLean, VA.
Those who knew her will remember her kindness, her quick wit, her remarkable steadiness—and the way she never forgot a birthday or failed to make those around her feel loved and important. Her legacy lives on in the hearts of her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and the many friends whose lives were brightened by her presence.
Joan is survived by her children and their spouses, Michael Bailey (Linda) and Jody Morstein (Rick); her grandchildren and their spouses, David Bailey (Samantha), Julianne Hendrickson (Danny), Ellen Wellen (Matt), Andrew Morstein (Rebecca Russell), and Joey Morstein (Molly Siewell); and her great-grandchildren, Blake Hendrickson, Bailey Hendrickson, Noah Wellen, Ethan Wellen, Luke Wellen, Charlotte Wellen, Andrew Bailey, Benjamin Bailey, and Bailey Morstein.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, A. M. (Al) Bailey, her parents, and her brother, Carol Moyers.
A celebration of her life was held on December 17, 2025, at 10:30 a.m. at Galilee United Methodist Church in Sterling, VA. Online condolences may be left at valleyfs.com.
