Joan McWilliam Boyd of Falmouth, MA, formerly of Woodstock, CT passed away on July 5, 2024, after an extended illness. She was born in Putnam, CT on May 11, 1942, to Larry and Dorothy (Dot) McWilliam of Woodstock, CT.
Joan was an accomplished academic, graduating Woodstock Academy in 1960 at the top of her class. While there she was a member of the National Honor Society, the Glee Club and Chapel Choir. She continued on to Smith College as a Philosophy Major, transferred to the University of Connecticut after her sophomore year and later graduated from UConn with a BA and MA. Early in her career she enjoyed teaching Philosophy at the former Annhurst College in Woodstock, CT.
Joan married David B. Boyd in 1962 in Pomfret, CT. Joan and David travelled extensively nationally, internationally, especially in Europe, North America and the Caribbean during the course of their marriage while also spending many happy summers with their family at their home on Martha's Vineyard.
After their sons were born, Joan served on the Women's Board of Directors at Day Kimball Hospital in Putnam, CT where for several years she organized and hosted the annual fundraising Cabaret Dinners.
Joan was preceded in death by her husband, David Boyd, and is survived by her son Christopher, his wife Ruthann of Palm Coast, FL and son Jonathan, his wife Mary of Chilmark, MA and granddaughter Emily.
Joan's later passion in life was her creativity and she launched a bead and jewelry making business on Martha's Vineyard that enjoyed great success for several years. She and David were devoted to their dogs Matilda and Daphne.
A private memorial service will be held in Woodstock at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Woodstock Volunteer Fire Association.
