Joan Celia Calcavecchio, 94, of Southbury, CT passed away at Pomperaug Woods senior Living Community on August 18, 2025.

Joan was born on July 18, 1931 in Brooklyn, NY to the late Guiseppe and Cologera Friscia, who emigrated from Sicily, Italy. She was the youngest of 13 sisters and brothers whom she stayed close to all her life.

Joan graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School and became a secretary for the Bank of Commerce in NYC, where she met her husband, Richard S. Calcavecchio. They were blissfully married for almost 50 years. Together, they moved to Hicksville, NY and then to Syosset, NY. Once her children completed grammar school, Joan began her employment at Geico Insurance Company for several years.

Later on, Joan and her husband purchased a home on Candlewood Lake in Brookfield, CT. It was here that she took up golf. Afterwards, they became snowbirds living at Heritage Village in the summer, and in Jensen Beach, FL in the winter. After Richard retired, they enjoyed traveling throughout Europe.

Joan was vivacious, energetic, fastidious and fashionable. She was a member of several parishes in the communities where they resided. She was passionate about golf and keeping her homes meticulous. Joan enjoyed cooking for her family and entertained many of Richard's clients from the bank. After Richard passed, Joan was so blessed to have many good friends at Pomperaug Woods, and the assistance she received there was truly a blessing.

Joan is survived by her children, Mary LaBarbera (husband Stephen) and Richard Calcavecchio. She is also survived by five grandchildren and one great-grandchild, Jeanine (and husband Dan) and their child Stella, Stephen, Scott, Ellen, and Gavin; and will be missed by many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11am on Tuesday, September 2, 2025 at Sacred Heart Church located at 910 Main St. S in Southbury, CT. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be sent to either St. Jude Children's Research Hospital or the Parkinson's Foundation. Carpino Funeral Home is honored to have been entrusted with Joan's final care and arrangements.
