Joan Louise Candy, 90, of Sykesville, passed away on Thursday, February 20, 2025, at Howard County General Hospital.
She was born on April 21, 1934, to the late Andrew Franklin Ashburn and Eleanor Wickham (Lamb) Ashburn. Joan was predeceased by her husband Albert Selby, who died in 2005.
Born and raised in Baltimore, Joan was a graduate of Western High School. She had a long career in the news industry as a reporter and ultimately retiring as a newspaper editor. Over the years, Joan worked with the former Sykesville Herald, The Howard County Times, multiple Montgomery County newspapers and retired as an editor from the Frederick News Post. She had a passion for animals and was a devoted mother to her family.
She is survived by sons and daughters-in-law Bill and Brenda Candy, Bob and Donna Candy and Rick and Ashley Candy; daughters and sons-in-law Kathy and Mike Curran and Susan Candy and Jack Davis; brother Ronald Ashburn and his wife, Pat and sister, Pat Zerrlaut. She is also survived by 14 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren.
Joan was predeceased by son David Candy.
The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 PM on Thursday, March 6, 2025, at Haight Funeral Home & Chapel, 6416 Sykesville Road, Sykesville where a memorial service will be held at 1 PM on Friday, March 7, 2025. Interment will be private.
The service will be livestreamed. You may access the livestream the day of the service on Joan's tribute page. It will be available to view on her tribute page after the service if you are not able to watch at the at time of the service.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Humane Society of Carroll County, Westminster, Maryland.
