WALKERTOWN – Joan Hampton Cavanaugh, 85, passed away Tuesday, September 19, 2023, at her home. Joan was born on October 27, 1937 in Stokes County to Marvin Odell and Irene Ashby Hampton. She retired from AT& T after 30 years of service.
She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. Joan loved living in North Carolina and being at home with her family, where she shared her talent of cooking with many! Her favorite dessert was iced tea and a cigarette! Joan enjoyed gospel music, shopping, and spending time with her sisters.
In addition to her parents, Joan was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, David Eugene Cavanaugh; and a brother Donald Hampton (Betty).
Surviving are her daughter, Tonya West (Bret); her son, Blake Cavanaugh (Valerie); nine grandchildren, Damien Cavanaugh (Zoey), David Cavanaugh (Adria), Julia C. Christensen (Brad), Jared Cavanaugh, Ayla C. Williams (Michael), Joshua Cavanaugh, Quentin West (Bethany), Trenton West, and Lexi West; 14 great grandchildren; and three sisters, June Vaughn (George), Linda White (John), and Connie Tetter.
A funeral service will be held at 4:00 pm Sunday, September 24, 2023 at Hayworth-Miller Kernersville Chapel. The family will receive friends 2:00 – 4:00 pm prior to the service at the funeral home. Burial will be held at 12:00 pm Tuesday, September 26, 2023 at Gardens of Memory in Walkertown.
