Joan Marie Dickerson

Joan M. Dickerson, age 93, passed away on February 28, 2024, at Exeter Hospital in Exeter, NH. She was born on May 31, 1930, in Passaic, NJ, to the late Harold and Mary Vespa. Joan took great pride in her family's heritage, particularly her father's immigration journey from Italy to America through Ellis Island, seeking a better life for his loved ones.
Raised in Passaic, NJ, Joan later relocated to California in 1948. It was there that she met her former husband, Richard Dickerson while working at the family restaurant her father owned. He was a loyal patron, and their shared interests blossomed into marriage on July 7, 1951. Together, they were blessed with children shortly after and raised their family in the Los Angeles area, enjoying the serenity of lakeside living. They loved taking the boat out and waterskiing on the lake. It brought Joan great joy knowing she was making memories with her family that would last a lifetime,
Despite challenges such as her husband's service in Vietnam, Joan remained devoted to her role as a homemaker, finding joy in nurturing her family. She had a creative spirit, finding fulfillment in mosaic work, knitting, sewing, and various arts and crafts. Joan's sense of humor and playfulness endeared her to her grandchildren, creating cherished memories filled with laughter and love.
Joan's love for the Christmas season was evident in her enthusiasm for gift wrapping, a tradition she delighted in as she showered her loved ones with tokens of her affection. She will be remembered for her warmth, humor, and the love she shared with those around her.
Joan was an avid swimmer accomplishing several miles a week and a daily walker doing 5 or more miles at a time. She also enjoyed going cross-country skiing.
Joan was predeceased by her son, Arthur "Art" Dickerson, and her brother, Robert "Bob" Vespa. She is survived by her sons, Michael (Barbara) Dickerson and John (Melissa) Dickerson, eight grandchildren - Leonie, Henri, Ferdinand, Mary, Thomas, David, Doug, Daniel, as well as five great-grandchildren - Emma, Harper, Averie, Allison, and Katie. Additionally, she is survived by her nephew, Bill, and nieces, Cynthia and Gina.
Private services will be held for the family.
Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery, Epping, NH.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Alzheimer's Association in memory of Joan M. Dickerson.
