She achieved her bachelor's degree in biology from Cornell University and her PhD in biology from Northwestern University. Her profession was an electron microscopist. At various times she lived in New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Ohio, and Illinois. After retiring she moved from Ohio to Illinois to be near her grandchildren.
Joan is survived by her sons Nathan (Julia) Johnson of Libertyville, Illinois, and Matthew Johnson who currently resides in the Philippines and her grandchildren Ethan Johnson, Aubrey Johnson, and Zoelle Johnson. She was preceded in death by her parents and her sister Susan Lowans.
All funeral arrangements are being held privately and were entrusted to Strang Funeral Chapel & Crematorium 410 E. Belvidere Rd. Grayslake, IL 60030. For more information log onto www.strangfuneral.org or contact (847)223-8122.
