Obituary of Joan Hornbeck
Joan Hornbeck is at last reunited with the love of her life, Ed Hornbeck, after an exceptionally long 22-year wait for their eternal life together. Their joyful reunion is to be commenced with a dance to "The Twelfth of Never" by Johnny Mathis surrounded by family and dear friends.
Gladys Joan Wadlington was born in Hutchinson County, South Dakota on February 13th, 1939. Joan and her fraternal twin Jean were the younger of eight children growing up outside Louisville, KY. She grew up enjoying farm life and loved the peaceful beauty of the bucolic rolling landscapes of Kentucky which is why she said she loved living in Mollala, Oregon. Her finest day came in 1957 when she married Ed Hornbeck, a marriage lasting 42 years until his death, but set about a love everlasting and enduring.
Joan was a fierce and loving woman and matriarch. A breast cancer survivor, devout Christian, and foster parent to dozens of children, Joan's generosity and caring nature seemingly had no bounds. She said her greatest joys were her husband, children, and her grandchildren who all miss her dearly. Her home was filled with pictures of family, swans she collected, and the smell of her delicious cooking. Listing out the things she loved was easy for her and will be familiar to anyone who knew her. We feel they describe her quite well. Her favorite things in her own words: "My children and grandchildren, happy times with family, my twin, coffee, strawberries, tomatoes fresh from the garden, comfortable clothes, clean houses, little kids, babies, singing, sewing, crossword puzzles, history, poetry, ballads, Irish music, bag-pipes, cooking, ironing, showers, yellow roses, words, hummingbirds, and soft rain."
Joan died on January 31st, 2022 in Canby, Oregon. She was 82 and passed peacefully in her home.
"Love one another, life is too short and uncertain to fight." -- Joan Hornbeck
She is survived by her sisters Betty Cathey and Patricia Schultz, her son Richard Hornbeck (Gina Hornbeck), as well as her daughters Jeana Pettit, and Kathyrn Hull (Brad Hull). Her Grandchildren Richard Barnes (Wesley Buckle), Brendan Hall (Jeni Hall), Breianne Hall, Shelby Riffey (Colby Riffey), Jonathan Hull (Stephanie Hull), Lane Hull, and Carson Hull. Her Great-Grandchildren Marcus Hall, Jayce Owen, Eliott Riffey, Raelynn Riffey, and Bradley John Hull. Being the natural caretaker that she is, she will be tending to and loving her grandsons Caleb and Philip Anthony who preceded her in death.
A GoFundMe has been created by Jonathan Hull in order to help pay for funeral and memorial expenses. Any donations left over will be given to the family to help get through this tragic and incredibly difficult time. A celebration of life will be held on what would be her 83rd birthday on Feburary 13th, 2022 at the Backstop Bar & Grill in the Antonia Ballroom at 211 N. Grant Street, Canby Oregon 97013 at noon.
