Published by McComas Family Funeral Homes - Bel Air on Nov. 15, 2016.
Joan S. Knapton, of Churchville, MD, died at the age of 78 on November 15, 2016, at the Senator Bob Hooper House in Forest Hill, MD. She was born in Quincy, MA, to Jacob Edwin and Anna Ebba (Johnson) Jacobson. She grew up in Weymouth and Quincy, MA, where, riding the bus to work one day, she caught the eye of a persistent young man out for a stroll, who eventually swept her south to Maryland. A resident of Harford County for 59 years, she was a member of Holy Trinity Episcopal Church and sang in the choir. Before moving to Maryland, she attended Brown University, where she sang with the Chattertocks a cappella group. She graduated from Notre Dame of Maryland University with a bachelor's degree in psychology, did graduate work at Loyola and attended Goucher College and Harford Community College. She worked as a social worker in foster care in Baltimore City and enjoyed music and needlepoint. She also loved to read. Survivors include her husband, John Knapton; her children, Edward Knapton of Texas, Alan Knapton of Maryland, Debbie Dunbar of Florida, Julie Lynn of Maryland, Mary Goldsborough of Maryland, Carolyn Barcomb of Pennsylvania and William Knapton of Maryland; and 25 grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, donations may be mailed to Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation, 383 Main Avenue, 5th Floor, Norwalk, CT 06851 or online at https://www.themmrf.org/donate-to-mmrf/.
