Minneapolis, MN, during the spring of 2026.
Joan was born on August 25, 1931, in
Minneapolis, Minnesota, to John and Mildred Hasselo (Powers). She was the oldest child in the family and was blessed with four sisters-Margo, Carol, Janice, and Jill-and one brother, Bradley. Joan attended Catholic grade school at Holy Name and graduated from St. Margaret's Catholic High School.
In high school, Joan Hasselo and Earl "Herb" Knoke fell in love and were married in 1950. Joan was a devoted and loving wife to Herb, and together they raised six wonderful children: Kerry, Steve, Terri Ann, Michael, Craig, and Mark. Joan often said, "The greatest gift in my life was my family." She cherished every moment spent with family and friends throughout the years. Joan and Herb placed great importance on their children, grandchildren, and extended family, which was evident at family gatherings and the countless children's and grandchildren's events they faithfully attended.
Christmas and Thanksgiving were always joyful occasions at Grandma's house. After dinner, games of Pictionary became a family tradition-loud, competitive, and full of laughter and smiles. Even outside of holidays, Joan treasured time with her loved ones, often spending quiet evenings working on 1,000-piece puzzles at a portable card table with her children and grandchildren until the puzzle was complete. Her laughter and warm smile were contagious, and a good joke from Joan could lift everyone's spirits.
Joan had an unwavering faith in God and Jesus and deep gratitude for all that the Lord provided throughout her life. Her faith sustained her through profound loss, as her husband, three children, and two grandchildren preceded her in death. Joan was a regular parishioner at Holy Name Catholic Church and St. Albert the Great Catholic Church, attending Mass faithfully. Her positive attitude and zest for life were infectious, and she truly believed we are on earth to do God's will and His work.
Joan is survived by daughter, Terri; sons, Michael, and Craig "Rocky" and grandchildren: Brian, Dan, Jennifer, April, Sabrina, Mark, Michael Jr., Nick, Michael, and Heather. She is also survived by many great-grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cousins, as well as sisters Carol Hogan, Jill Arens, and Janice Hasselo.
She was preceded in death by parents, John, and Mildred; husband, Herb; children Kerry, Steve, and Mark; grandchildren Nicole and Tanja; and siblings Margo and Bradley.
The Cremation Society of
Edina, Minnesota, has been entrusted with Joan's arrangements.
