March 25, 1938 – November 13, 2025
Joan A. Smythe, 87 years, of Perryville, MD, entered into eternal rest surrounded by the love of her family. A devoted wife, mother, Mom-Mom, and woman of unwavering faith, Joan’s life was a beautiful reflection of compassion, music, and the deep love she poured into everyone around her.
On June 14, 1954, Joan married the love of her life, Wayne F. Smythe, Sr., with whom she shared a long and cherished marriage. Together they built a strong and loving family, raising five children: JoAnne Burlin (married to Roland “Flicker”), Wayne “Butch” Smythe, Jr. (married to Christine), Douglas Smythe, Michelle Smythe, and Jennifer Alexander (married to David).
Joan was blessed with 12 grandchildren—Crystal Tucker (Jerry), Renea Reinhart (John), Tesheka Smythe, Tiffany Smythe, Chanee Short (Brian), Jason Alexander (Tasha), Derek Smythe (Rachel), Nathan Cibrian (Jacqueline), Dale Alexander (Michele), Candace Smythe, John Smythe (Kriza), and Karly Lyons (Kendall). She was further blessed with 28 great-grandchildren, each one a joyful addition to the family she treasured so dearly.
A woman whose faith guided her entire life, Joan attended church faithfully for many years. Even when she could no longer attend in person, her commitment to Bible study and her relationship with the Lord never wavered. One of her greatest joys was sharing her gift of music. Joan loved singing gospel hymns and playing for her church and her family. Her grandchildren grew up knowing they could always count on Mom-Mom’s voice filling the room during holiday celebrations. These are memories that will remain forever in their hearts.
She was preceded in death by her daughter, JoAnne Burlin, and son-in-law, Roland “Flicker”; her parents, George F. Bines, Sr. and Carrie Calvert Bines; and her siblings: George F. Bines, Jr., Lee Roy Bines, Sylvia Lieske, Florence Liddell, and Alice Sibigtroth.
She leaves behind her beloved husband of 71 years, Wayne; her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews who loved her dearly. Joan’s legacy is one of faith, love, laughter, and music. Again memories that will be carried forward through every generation of her family.
To know Joan was to feel loved, supported, and uplifted. She will be deeply missed by all who were blessed to be part of her life.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, November 29, 2025, at 1 p.m. at The Minker Banquet Hall, 920 Principio Furnace Rd., Perryville, MD 21903.
