Joan Hopkins Young, 59, of Myrtle Beach, passed away on March 22, 2023, at McLeod Seacoast Hospital in Little River, SC, with her beloved family by her side.
Joan was born in Greenville, South Carolina on December 11, 1963, a daughter of Curtis Wilmer Hopkins and Anne Elizabeth McGoogan Hopkins. Joan was preceded in death by her father Curtis and her aunt Elizabeth "Lib" Bailey.
As a young woman, Joan attended and graduated high school from Wake Christian Academy. Later, she attended and graduated from both Peace College and UNC – Chapel Hill, where she obtained her Bachelor's Degree in History. In her working years, Joan worked in accounts for the State of North Carolina.
Joan was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Garner, NC. She also loved animals and generously supported animal charities. In her leisure time, she enjoyed the music of The Bee Gees and The Eagles. She also enjoyed the comedy of Carol Burnette and her favorite color was purple. Joan's family describes her as loving, generous and charitable. Despite the health challenges she faced in life, Joan's positivity and strength remained until the end.
Joan is survived by her loving family, including her mother Anne Hopkins, her brother David Hopkins (Elizabeth), and her niece Verity Hopkins, all of Myrtle Beach, SC.
A memorial service to honor Joan will be held at the First Presbyterian Church of Garner, NC on Saturday, April 1, 2023 at 2:00 PM. In lieu of flowers and to honor's Joan's charitable nature, the family encourages donations be made to one of the following organizations: ASPCA (www.aspca.org/ways-to-give), First Presbyterian Church (503 Lakeside Drive, Garner, NC 27529), or to the cancer charity of your choice.
