Joann Cohen, 90, of Middletown, RI, and longtime resident of Third Street in Newport, passed away on March 25, 2026.
Born in Caledonia, New York on May 22, 1935, she was the daughter of the late George and Bernice (Greene) Haney. Joann made Newport her home for more than fifty years, building a life defined by warmth, humor, kindness, dedication, and a quiet industriousness. She was a longtime employee at the former JC Penney and later found her way to the Naval War College, where she became a well-loved member of the organization. A faithful member of the United Congregational Church in Middletown, Joann was also a talented seamstress and creative spirit who enjoyed sewing, arts and crafts, and was never shy about taking on a DIY project to beautify her home.
Joann is survived by her son Victor Cohen and his wife Nichole of Randolph, MA, and her beloved grandson Ethan. She also leaves a brother George Haney of Rochester, NY, a niece Kim Blades of Middletown, RI, and many more nieces and nephews across New England and beyond. She was preceded in death by her parents and her siblings Donald Haney and Ellen Hogan.
Visiting hours will be held on Friday, April 3, 2026 from 9:00-10:30am at the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport. A Memorial Service will follow on Friday at 11:00am at the United Congregational Church, 524 Valley Road, Middletown.
