JoAnn Crace Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by DeMoney-Grimes Funeral Home on Jun. 28, 2024.

JoAnn F. Crace, 66, of Churubusco, Indiana passed away Friday, June 28, 2024. Born October 3, 1957, in Garrett, Indiana she was a daughter of the late Edison Shippy, Sr. and Bev (Squier) Smyth who survives.

Jo graduated from Dekalb High School with the Class of 1975. On August 18, 1990, she married David R. Crace at the Columbia City United Methodist Church, where they were members. She was an appraiser and also co-owner at Ken Crace Real Estate Appraisal Inc., helping to carry on the family business.

Jo was the leader of the family. She worked tirelessly to ensure that her children had every opportunity to thrive and succeed, instilling in them values that will continue to shape their lives forever. To her grandchildren, Jo was not just a grandmother; she was their beloved Nana. One of Jo's greatest joys in life was spending time with her nieces and nephews, embarking on escapades that created memories to last a lifetime. Her love knew no bounds, and her impact will be felt for generations to come.

Her passion for quilting was not just a hobby but a craft through which she touched the lives of many, sharing her talent generously by teaching others the artistry of quilting. Her generosity knew no limits, as she extended a helping hand to anyone in need without hesitation, embodying the true essence of compassion. Together with Dave, her partner in life's adventures, Jo reveled in the thrill of sled dog racing, navigating through life's challenges with strength and unity. Their home was a sanctuary not only for each other but also for foreign exchange students whom they welcomed with open arms, bridging cultures and forming lasting bonds.

As we bid farewell to Jo, let us remember her vibrant spirit that will continue to live on in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to have known her. May her legacy inspire us to be kinder, more loving individuals, spreading warmth and light just as she did during her time with us.

Jo is survived by her husband and best friend, Dave; children, Aimee (Nicholas) Wentworth, Philip (fiancée, Sirena Rodriguez) Ellert; grandchildren, Adam Ellert, Joseph Shultzaberger, Ryan Wentworth, Matthew Ellert, Lillian Joanna Ellert; siblings, Judy (Gary) Hart, Eddie Shippy, Jr.; and several nieces and nephews. She was also preceded in death by her infant son, Jeremy Ellert; and sister, Cindy Vanderpool.

Visitation will be 12:00 - 2:00 pm with a Celebration of Life at 2:00 pm on Saturday, July 27, 2024, at DeMoney-Grimes Funeral Home, 600 Countryside Drive, Columbia City.
