JoAnn King

JoAnn King was born August 29, 1936, to William and Gladys Miller. JoAnn was the eighth of eleven siblings.
JoAnn grew up in Atchison, Kansas and matriculated through the Atchison school system, graduating in 1954. After graduation JoAnn worked at the local drugstore and soda fountain. In 1962, she moved to Topeka and worked at the Kansas Neurological Institute. In 1965, JoAnn married Sgt. Sammie King, and they were married for 59 years. That same year she started her career in nursing service with the Veterans Administration Hospital. JoAnn helped our veterans and often had stories to tell.
JoAnn transferred from the Nursing Service to the Radiology Department in 1984, where she was department secretary until her retirement in February 1998. In her retirement she was able to spend time with her grandchildren and later in life her great-grandchildren. JoAnn and Sam took road trips to visit family in South Carolina and Alabama. She was also able to travel to California and Washington state.
JoAnn spent 20 plus years as the treasurer of Highland Crest Community Seventh Day Adventist Church and filled in from time to time as the church pianist. She also donated to charities that she believed in such as St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, Adventist Development and Relief Agency, and Religious Liberty, just to name a few.
JoAnn enjoyed collecting figurines and had quite an extensive collection of specifically African American art. She would mess around in the yard and would ensure that her roses and irises were always beautiful.
In recent years, JoAnn had her share of health struggles, and more recently she often mentioned she was tired. On March 22, 2025, she took her rest to await our Saviors soon coming.
JoAnn leaves to mourn her husband, Sammie; her daughters, Krystal and Sandy; stepdaughter, Pheetta; stepson, Theodore; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.
JoAnn's visitation will be at 1 p.m. with a memorial service to follow at 2 p.m. on Thursday, April 10, 2025, at Highland Crest Community SDA Church, 3225 SE Adams Street, Topeka KS 66605.
