Joanna Smith Obituary

Joanna Brock Smith, of Mechanicsville, VA, passed away at her home peacefully on January 29, 2026, at the age of 78. Born on November 9, 1947, of Henry C. Brock and Catherine Forrester Brock in Richmond, VA, Joanna graduated from John Marshall High School in 1965. Immediately after, she went to work for what was known at the time as the C&P Telephone Company, where she worked as an esteemed co-worker for over three decades, retiring in 1996 from Bell Atlantic.

Joanna brightened every room that she entered, embodying the maxim of "dance like no one is watching," except she could not have cared less, and perhaps preferred, if everyone was watching. Described at times as "spunky" or "sassy," at others as "strong-willed," Joanna constantly tried to squeeze as much out of life as possible in everything she did, bringing her spirited joy to bear. She always enjoyed being in the mix of things, whether helping with community events, going to baseball games, watching horse races, or taking a jaunt to Las Vegas or Atlantic City. She loved, including tough love, fiercely and loyally, and she was loved in return. She will be deeply missed and fondly remembered.

She is survived by her husband, Michael S. Smith, and three children, R. Scott Smith (of Exeter, NH), Michael S. Smith, Jr. (of Calabash, NC), and Casey S. Smith (of Quinton, VA) and her beloved dog, Punkydoodle, AKA "Boss."

There will be no services at this time.

I´m so sorry to hear this. JoAnna was one of my best friends. We worked together at C&P Telephone Co and retired together at Bell Atlantic. I loved her spunky attitude. You always knew where you stood with JoAnna. You will truly be missed.
