Joanne Chance Halberg (1937-2024)
Joanne Marion Chance Halberg, 87, of Dexter, Oregon, departed this life on December 21, 2024. She was born to Carroll Francis Chance and Jeanette Elaine John Chance on December 18, 1937 at Forest Grove, Oregon. She has three siblings: Marna (John) Isles, Gail (Dennis) Hopkins, and Joel (Trisha) Chance.
As all who read this will have different memories of our awesome mother, we invite you to fill in your special memories as we are all doing at this time.
Joanne was the oldest of four children and was raised in Oregon. The beach was always her favorite place. Her dad was a lumberjack and one of the best tree fellers in the forests of Oregon. She graduated from Marshfield High School, Coos Bay, Oregon, in 1955 after serving as a class officer. Shortly thereafter she met and married James Richard Graham. Joanne was a talented secretary and helped support the family through his civil engineering degree. They then moved their family of five to the Denver, Colorado, area where she spent many years raising her children. In 1970, the family welcomed another boy and the family of six was complete. She loved caring, nurturing, and teaching all four of her children.
Joanne was a gracious hostess to youth groups, her children's friends, and ladies who wanted to study the scriptures together. She loved playing the piano, reading, knitting, quilting, sewing, and making her home beautiful and warm for those who lived there as well as visitors.
After a divorce, she married Jim Frazier in California, whom she survived. At the time of her death, her husband, Robert Halberg, and she had enjoyed 23 years of marriage (and many dogs) in her home state of Oregon.
She was a life-long disciple of Jesus Christ and taught her children to love and trust God and Jesus. She loved her scriptures and prayed unceasingly. She was a great example to all around her. Joanne was known for her humility, her warm smile, her listening ear, and most of all, her unconditional love.
She is survived by her husband, Robert Halberg; her children Deborah (Wally) McPheters, Nancy (Alan) Nelson, Michael (Gwen) Graham, and Jeffrey (Cindy) Graham. Her 12 grandchildren, and 24 great grandchildren were a joy to her and she loved them well. All of her siblings survive her. She was preceded in death by her parents, and one granddaughter, Amanda Graham.
Special appreciation goes to Pastor Rob for his great care for Bob and our mother during her most recent illness. Thank you for loving her as one of your own sheep. The family would also like to thank the staff at Bristol Hospice for their care over the last few months. We also thank Major Family Funeral Home for their good care and kindness. Family and friends will hold a memorial at Pleasant Hill Cemetery, January 25, 2025 at noon.
