Joanne Turell, a devoted mother, grandmother, and Yankee fan, passed away peacefully on November 8, 2025, in Englewood, New Jersey, just nine days shy of her 83rd birthday.
Born in New York City on November 17, 1942, to Shepherd and Bernice Simpson Schaeffer, Joanne grew up with a generous heart and nurturing spirit that would touch everyone she met throughout her life. She earned her Bachelor of Science in Education from New York University, launching a fulfilling career that saw her touch countless lives as both a teacher and, later, as a computer programmer.
Joanne spent the majority of her life in Short Hills and Florham Park, New Jersey, where she created a loving home with her beloved husband, Perry Turell, who passed away on January 24, 2012. Their 48-year marriage was one-of-a-kind, marked by immense love, unconditional commitment, and savoring shared adventures with family.
She is survived by her daughter, Lauren Turell Kramer; her son, Glenn Turell; four cherished grandchildren; and one adored great grand dog who brought joy and countless smiles to her later years.
Joanne loved to enjoy life's pleasures. She was an avid mahjong player, a skilled knitter, and a faithful New York Yankees fan who never missed a chance to root for her team. She delighted in a day spent at the Short Hills Mall and traveled extensively around the world, with particular fondness for Turks and Caicos, where she created lifelong bonds with chosen family. You could often find Joanne floating in the pool on a sunny day with a good book in hand.
Her wit, supportive nature, and adventurous spirit will be deeply missed by all who knew her. Joanne leaves behind a legacy that inspires all to live life to the fullest and the simple wisdom that life's greatest joys are often found in family, friendship, and a sunny afternoon by the pool.
