Joao Afonso

AFONSO, João, 90, of Cumberland, passed away on Friday, July 23, 2021 at Hope Health Center surrounded by his loving family. He was the beloved husband of the late Gloria Afonso.
Born in Castanheira de Chã, Trás-os-Montes Portugal, he was the son of the late Domingos Marques and Maria Afonso. He moved to this country in 1975, settling in Cumberland where he resided his entire life.
Mr. Afonso was employed as a Machinist for Steel Metal Foundry for many years until his retirement.
João was a communicant of Our Lady of Fatima Church. Those who love him will always remember João as an active person who enjoyed working on his garden and playing with his grandkids and great grandkids and going for long walks around Cumberland, but most of all will remember the love and joy he had for his family.
He leaves his sons, Antonio Afonso and his wife Maria Rosa of Cumberland and José Manuel Afonso of Connecticut; his two grandchildren, Tony and Jorge Afonso; along with their wives Michelle & Nancy; and his great grandchildren Ashton & Eliana Afonso; he also leaves behind brothers Antonio and Daniel Santos of Cumberland, Armando, Albino, and Abilio Santos of Portugal, and their wives as well as several nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his sister Precina Alves and her husband of Portugal.
A funeral mass will be held Thursday, July 29, 2021 at 11:00 am at Our Lady of Fátima Church, Fátima Drive, Cumberland. The burial will be held in the Cemeterio de Castanheira de Chã, in Castanheira de Chã, Montalegre Portugal. Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend calling hours held prior to the funeral mass from 9:00 am to 10:30 am at J. J. Duffy Funeral Home, 757 Mendon Road, Rt. 122, Cumberland.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to Our Lady of Fátima Church.
