Joe Henry Bunkley, Jr. was a testament to the Lord's mercy, grace, and power throughout his life. Molded by the divine into a warrior for God's kingdom, Joe triumphed over numerous health battles over the decades. On Monday, December 16, 2024, at the age of 71, Joe, a beloved spirit to many, was called home. Affectionately known as Pookie, Bunk, Big Dog Joe, Joe Joe, Coach, JoeSki, and many other endearing pet names, he will always be remembered as a cherished patriarchal figure in his family.
Joe was born on March 11, 1953, to Joe H and Rosie Mae Bunkley in Birmingham, Alabama, where he spent his early years. At the age of 16, he moved with his mother to Detroit, Michigan, where he completed high school and attended Michigan State University. Through tireless effort, determination, and unwavering support from his wife, Joe earned his Bachelor's Degree in Social Science Law and Sociology.
Joe's profound love for children was evident throughout his career. He served many years in the youth ministries as Head Elder over the youth/teens, church outings, transportation, point person for youth aggression and yes, he was a Sunday school teacher too. He worked as a Youth Specialist for the State of Michigan, guiding at-risk youth and helping them develop social, emotional, and educational skills. He also served as a liaison for Child Family Services and the Lansing Family Independence Agency. Later, he worked for General Motors as in-house security, Value City Suit Manager where his artistic abilities shined and Faurecia (a GM Supplier) as a GM Liaison until he retired, but his favorite role might have been as a little league softball coach for his daughter-an experience he cherished deeply.
Joe's first love was his family. His dedication and hard work allowed Joe and Cliftine to visit over 40 states with their children. He loves the LORD, showed profound wisdom, enjoyed the History channel and would never shut up about WWII. He always prioritized family and made significant efforts to be present at every meaningful event: graduations, births, playoff games, and reunions-he was there for all of them, always the LIFE OF THE PARTY! Also, the best dressed at the party! Joe's second love was cooking, particularly grilling. He was renowned for sharing his culinary expertise with anyone willing to listen. Many successful barbecues owe their success to Joe, and his title of grill master will live on in his grill apprentices, especially his nephews Big-C and Gary. This third love, was dressing everyone to the 9's. His eye for fashion had his client's wives seeking Clif out, to rave about their new husband.
Joe had a special way of bestowing nicknames upon his loved ones, but everyone knew his favorite call was for "Cliiiiiiifffff" (wait for smiles).
Joe was preceded in death by: his father, Joe Henry Bunkley, Sr.; his sister, Stiner Jean Slay; and his brother, Fred Bunkley. He is survived by: his wife of 38 years, Cliftine Y. Bunkley; his mother, Rosie Mae Joyce of Muncie, Indiana; his daughters, Dorrin M. Bunkley Crockett (Paris) of Hemet, California, and Toi Yvonne Bunkley of Pontiac, Michigan; his son, Tyler J. Bunkley of
Lansing, Michigan; and godson, Jaquai Beverly of Murfreesboro, Tennessee; his twin brothers, Mickey R. Joyce and Rickey R. Joyce of Muncie, Indiana; and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.
Joe brought laughter and warmth wherever he went and will be profoundly missed by all who knew him.
