Joe Castino Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Major Family Funeral Home - Springfield on Jan. 2, 2026.
Joe Mitchell Castino passed away peacefully on Christmas Day after a courageous battle with cancer. He was 73.
Joe was born on August 18, 1952, in Port Arthur, Texas, to Tony and Mary Castino. He was raised in Groves, Texas, and graduated from Port Neches–Groves High School in 1970. From an early age, Joe demonstrated a deep curiosity about the world and a lifelong love of learning.
In 1978, Joe moved to Fort Collins, Colorado, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Horticulture from Colorado State University. His passion for education led him to continue his academic journey, earning a Master's degree from San Diego State University and a Doctorate from the University of Pittsburgh.
Joe later settled in Redlands, California, where he spent many years teaching linguistics and education at the University of Redlands. He retired in 2015 as Assistant Dean, leaving behind a legacy of dedication, mentorship, and quiet leadership. After retirement, Joe moved to Eugene, Oregon, where he embraced the natural beauty of the Pacific Northwest.
An avid road cyclist for over 50 years, Joe logged nearly 400,000 miles throughout his lifetime. Cycling was more than a hobby-it was a way of life. He rode with many cycling groups and was most recently an active member of GEARS, where he proudly served as a ride leader in Eugene.
Joe was also a devoted supporter of the birding community. Known affectionately as the "bird whisperer," he could identify nearly any bird on sight or sound. His love for nature extended to landscaping and environmental stewardship, and he held a special reverence for the redwoods of the Pacific Northwest.
Joe is survived by his beloved daughter, Cecy Marino; his son-in-law, Alex Marino; and his cherished granddaughter, Isla Marino, all of Anaheim Hills, California. He is also survived by his siblings: brother Johnny Castino and his wife Connie; sister Kathy Mercer and her husband Jerry; brother Jimmy Castino and his wife Vicki; and sister Pam Hebert and her husband Todd, all of Texas.
The family would like to extend heartfelt gratitude to Nancy Whyte, Joe's partner in life who provided unwavering love and support during his illness.
Joe was a kind, gentle, and good-natured soul. His quiet and calm presence never diminished the profound impact he had on those around him. He was a bright light in this world, and his absence will be deeply felt by the many lives he touched.
