Joe H. Chappell, age 86, of Newberry, died August 15, 2023 at his home, surrounded by his family and beside his wife of 60+ years, Adgie Felker Chappell. Born July 4, 1937 in Newberry, he was a son of the late John and Annie Lou Spotts Chappell.
Joe was a noble and kind man who loved his family – especially his grandchildren. He was a great provider, and was always happy, regardless of the circumstances. In the 8th Grade, he dropped out of school to help provide for his family, later attaining his GED. He was a veteran of the United States Air Force. He was a longtime member of Aveleigh Presbyterian Church.
His career was in road construction where he worked as a Superintendent for Eagle Construction Company. Joe found joy in his work. He had a reputation as a hard worker, who served with loyalty and dedication. He also had a teacher's heart, and was often found showing other team members how to learn a skill or complete a task.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by sons David Chappell of Roebuck, SC and John Chappell (Deanne Sweet) of Newberry; grandchildren Logan, Danielle, and Blake Chappell; and siblings, Mack Chappell, Mary Ann Wilson, and Don Chappell. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews who he greatly loved.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers Charles "Chuck" Chappell and Tommy Chappell.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Aveleigh Presbyterian Church at 1211 Calhoun Street, Newberry, SC 29108.
Memories and messages of condolence may be shared with the family here on his tribute wall.
Whitaker Funeral Home is honored to assist the Chappell family.
