Joseph E. Coon, 93, of Loganville, GA died peacefully on Monday, February 5, 2024, after being in hospice care for nine months. Joe Coon was born April 6, 1930, in Brookhaven, MS, the second of six children born to John Henton and Erie Day Coon. He is preceded in death by his parents and his siblings: Donald, Jerri, Al, John, and Margaret. He is also preceded in death by his loving wife of 51 years, Margarette Reece Coon.
While attending Howard College in Birmingham, AL where he was an outstanding basketball player, Joe met his future wife, Margarette. Joe and Margarette married on February 5, 1954. After graduating Howard College, he joined the US Army and served for two years at Ft. Eustice, VA. Mr. Coon went to graduate school at the University of TN where he studied and received a master's degree in social work. His career was set as he went on to serve in that field with the Alabama Mental Health Department and later moved to Atlanta, GA to work with the Health and Human Services Department of the federal government.
Upon his retirement, Joe and Margarette served as Mission Service Corps volunteers through the Home Mission board of the Southern Baptist Convention traveling extensively throughout the country helping churches establish their missions efforts. They helped start new churches in several states and served locally with the Stone Mountain Baptist Association as Director of Missions Development. They were integral in establishing the Stone Mountain Ministry Center at Indian Creek Baptist Church.
Mr. Coon is survived by his estranged wife, Sharon; his son and daughter-in-law, Eddie and Caroline Coon of Tucker, GA; son and daughter-in-law Steve and Jodi Coon of Loganville, GA; and son and daughter-in-law Alan and Linda Coon of Braselton, GA. He is also survived by eleven grandchildren: Jennie Shaw, Rebecca Smith, Aubree Kimmons, Andi Coon, Renee Carter, Joseph Coon III, Jonathan Coon, Brian Coon, Brooky Coon, Katie Coon, and Brittney Ruff; great grandchildren: Vash Shaw, Knox Smith, and Lively Jean Smith, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
The family will receive visitors between 6:00-8:00 pm, Thursday, February 8 at Hamilton Mill Memorial Chapel in Buford, GA. A Celebration of Life service will be held Friday, February 9, at Zion Hill Baptist Church in Buford at 11:00 am followed by a graveside service at Floral Hills Memorial Gardens in Tucker, GA. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Building Fund at Zion Hill Baptist Church, Buford, GA.
