Sustained by the love of his family and after a decades long fight with his health, Joe R. Jimenez passed away on September 21, 2025 at the age of 73. He was born on February 6, 1952 in El Paso, Texas; son of Jose Vasquez Jimenez and Consuelo (Connie) Rodriquez Mendias. He is preceded in death by both of his parents.
Joe graduated from Burgess High School in El Paso, Texas. As an accomplished musician and clarinet player, he received All City, All Region and All State accolades in the State of Texas. He loved being in the renowned Burgess H.S. Band. He worked his way through Brigham Young University and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Communications and was a die-hard BYU fan for the rest of his life.
As a young man, Joe served as a missionary in the Northern States Mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. He considered the time he spent teaching about Jesus Christ to people in Illinois and Indiana as life changing and divine. He met a man on his mission who taught him sign language; knowledge he would later need when communicating with his Deaf daughter.
At BYU he met the love of his life Rebecca (Becky) Arlene Hanks. They were sealed for time and all eternity in the Salt Lake City Temple on August 15, 1975. He would later recall with fondness their first date where Becky made him lunch, "it was love at first bite." They celebrated 50 years of a blissful marriage in 2025 just before his passing.
A devout follower of Jesus Christ, he served as a Bishop for the 3rd Ward Congregation in Albuquerque for eight years and Branch President of the University Branch for four years. He was fondly known as Bishop or President Jimenez. His proudest moments were helping people cultivate their testimonies of Jesus Christ, watching them go to the temple, and seeing the happiness the Savior brought them.
Temples were an important part of his life; he felt that God imparted knowledge to him as he attended. This guided him later in life when he served for 10 years as an ordinance worker in the Albuquerque Temple. He also served in multiple other callings within the church, including High Councilor, Young Men's president, Primary and Sunday School teacher, and most recently chorister directing congregational Hymns.
He had a very successful professional life as a pharmaceutical marketing representative and trainer. His mottos were "treat everyone with respect going up the ladder because you might meet them on the way down" and "people will never care about how much you know until they know how much you care." These were not just phrases to him; it was the way he lived. He taught his family to be kind to those around them, a principle he always practiced. His respectful manner led him to consistently outsell his counterparts; he was often recognized for his integrity and exceptional work ethic.
Joe was always quick to express how proud he was of his family. Father of 5 children: Jessica Peru (Gerardo) of Los Lunas, New Mexico; Sarah Jarvis (Micah) of Herriman, Utah; Joshua Jimenez (Krystle) of Meridian, Idaho; Matthew Jimenez (Jamie) of Meridian, Idaho; and Katy Jimenez of Caldwell, Idaho. He was the loving grandfather of Benson Jarvis, Isaiah Jimenez, Taft Jarvis, Amulek Jarvis, Bethany Jimenez, Tate Jimenez, Isabelle Jimenez, London Jimenez, Elizabeth Peru, Joseph Jimenez, Chase Jimenez and soon to be baby boy Jimenez. He is survived by his wife, children, grandchildren, brother Michael Jimenez, Aunts Dellie Diaz and Sally Jimenez.
Joe's life was plagued with illness, he contracted rheumatic fever as a young boy and as an adult dealt with diabetes and heart disease. He had a leg amputation and lived in constant pain for over a decade prior to passing away. Despite his physical struggles, he lived with thoughtfulness, kindness, and generosity. He had a testimony like that of Job, "the Lord gave, and the Lord hath taken away; blessed be the name of the Lord… [f]or I know that my redeemer liveth, and that he shall stand at the latter day upon the earth: And though after my skin worms destroy this body, yet in my flesh shall I see God."
Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Monday, September 29, 2025 at the Sage Ward Chapel, Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. 8130 Sage Rd SW Albuquerque, New Mexico 87121. Viewing for family and friends will be held for one hour prior to the services at the church. Graveside services will be held 2:00 p.m. Monday, October 6th, 2025 at the Pleasant View Cemetery in Burley Idaho. Funeral services are under the direction of Morrison Payne Funeral home of Burley.
