JOE POWELL Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Carter Funeral Home, Inc. - Elyria on Dec. 15, 2025.
Joe Howard Powell, 93, of Elyria, Ohio, was welcomed into Paradise on Saturday, December 6, surrounded by his loving family.

Born June 20, 1932, in Greenville, Alabama, Joe later made his home in Elyria, where his life became a steady blessing to family, church, and community. He was a devoted member of Second Baptist Church and faithfully served on the Usher Board, finding genuine joy in welcoming both new and longtime members into the House of God. He did not just open doors-he opened hearts, standing as a quiet witness to hospitality, reverence, and love.

Joe worked for many years at Elyria Foundry and retired after a career marked by diligence and respect. Well known and deeply respected throughout the community, he carried himself with humility and strength. In everyday life, Joe enjoyed washing cars and devoted many years to baseball, playing and managing teams, including managing Don Beale's team in the Hot Stove League. Wherever he served, he brought order, encouragement, and care.

Joe is survived by those who will forever treasure his legacy and precious memories: his daughters, Stephanie Henson (née Powell), Michelle Horton (née Powell), and Carla Powell of Elyria; Lillie Wilson of Montgomery; and Veronica Cofield (née Smallwood) of Elyria; his sons, Marlon Powell of Columbus and Zack Peterson of Elyria; his sisters, Lillie Pearl Cheatham of Greenville and Louise McQueen of Fayetteville; his brothers, Wiley (Fannie) Powell of Youngstown and Willie Shepherd of Greenville; and his grandchildren, Timothy (Tracy) Powell, Jourdan Powell, Jasmine Henson, Mica Powell, Myles Henson, and Micayla Horton. He also leaves behind 15 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Joe is now reunited with his beloved wife, Lillie Powell (née White), with his parents Leona Shepherd-Powell, and Johnny Powell who preceded him in entering Paradise, as well as his brothers Dempsey Powell, Jim Powell, Walter Powell, Roy Shepherd, Nelson Powell and Earlie Shepherd; and his sisters Johnnie Lee Lowery, Corrie Hamilton, Cora Lee Powell, Katherine White, Ruthie Mae White, Roberta Murphy, Lula Mae Smith, Eula Vee Hines, and Leola Gettis.

Joe will be remembered for his kindness, his faithful service, his devotion to family, and the warmth and generosity he freely shared with all who knew him. His life spoke without noise, and his legacy will continue to echo in the lives he touched.

To the Entire Family:and friends of one so loved and respected. Sometimes it's hard to see through our tears. But even when we can't see, God has promised to be there, loving you, God will supply a comforter that will strengthen each and everyone personalities exactly what is needed for you to face each day. Matthew: 5:4 Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted. May the Lord be your source of inner strength and know that there is a loving God watching over you and that will stay close by your side.God will mend the broken hearted. My family and I are unable to travel but know that we really care and love each and everyone from the heart

Joe always met my husband and I with a smile when we visited Second Baptist Church. I have known him most of my life. He worked with my father and we are Family. What a blessing to have him in your life for 93 years. Family you have my deepest sympathy. Shirley Wingard Robinson
