I met Mr. Sinnott at a comic book convention at The Coachman Hotel in White Plains, NY in the mid-1980s. I think I was 11. He was in attendance as a guest artist, taking requests to draw characters. I asked him to draw Wolverine (because, of course, 1980s -- EVERYONE Wolverine-obsessed). He said he didn't recognize the name. Maybe a joke...? Either way, he turned to a fellow artist who said it was the yellow guy in the X-Men. Mr. Sinnott nodded -- ah, right -- and set to drawing. When he was finished with his sketch, he wouldn't charge me for it. My mind was blown. It was, if memory serves, my very first work of art, drawn right before my 11 year-old eyes, signed, and ready for framing. I couldn't believe the artist wouldn't take compensation. It was an act of kindness and generosity I've never forgotten. And 35+ years later, his beautiful sketch still hangs in my office. I mention all of this because I suspect that, despite the brevity of our interaction, it spoke very clearly to the kind of person Mr Sinnott was. I offer my very sincere (if very belated) condolences to his family, and I thank him again for the precious gift.

Joe was a wonderfully thoughtful man. He was willing to sign for fans up until shortly before his death. In my youth, he was always a con favorite until he stopped attending. He was from the old school. He was never prideful or boastful. He was from the greatest generation and Joe would sy he was just doing his job. But from the comic book greats from Jack Kirby to John Byrne.. nobody other than Stan left a more indelible mark on the Fantastic Four - simply put - he was the greatest inker on the World's Greatest Comic Magazine! Nuff said.

Joe Sinnott was a gentleman and a gifted artist. His work will always be fondly remembered in the pop culture world. He was humble and kind and made everyone he met feel special. The comic art world lost a Real Hero and the world lost a very special soul.
