Joe Styres Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Wake Funeral & Cremations Services, Inc. on Jan. 12, 2026.
Our beloved husband and father, Joe Styres, 69, of Pittsboro, NC, passed away on January 2, 2026. Born on February 12, 1956 in Sylacauga, Alabama, he was a devoted husband to Karen, a loving father to Caitlin, Jarod, and Alicia, and a caring grandfather to his five grandsons.

Joe was a force of nature, determined to work hard for his family and give them the life he felt they deserved. His family meant more to him than anything in the world. Joe was a passionate, kind, and gentle soul who valued giving back to those less fortunate, and always made an effort to approach the world in an unbiased, educated, and logical manner. He was known for his quick wit, his love of music, and his unwavering support for his family and those he loved.

Starting his career in public accounting, Joe spent 20 years in financial management positions at technology companies in California before moving to NC. He then shifted into the public sector and held roles as CFO for Raleigh-Durham International Airport, Piedmont Triad International Airport and the Durham Housing Authority. Joe was known as a strategic leader who worked well with colleagues, built out and delivered on organizational visions and prided himself on developing strong teams.

Joe is survived by his wife Karen Styres, his children Caitlin (Daniel) and Jarod (Chelsea) Styres, Alicia Montgomery (Joe), and his five grandchildren (Everett, Austin, Luke, Judah, and Mason). He also leaves behind his mother Lorene Dickinson, step-mother Barbara Styres, siblings Don Styres (Sheila), Connie Styres (Matt), Teri Donaldson, Rob Styres (Terri) and Tina Barber (Mark) along with many nieces, nephews, in-laws and other extended family members who will miss him dearly. Joe is preceded in death by his father Lemuel Styres and sister Beth Hefner.

All who knew Joe are invited to a celebration of life being held on February 12, 2026 at 3PM at Starrlight Mead (130 Lorax Lane) in Pittsboro NC. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America, Wounded Warrior Project or World Wildlife Fund, all causes near and dear to Joe.

His family finds comfort knowing Joe is at peace and will continue to hold close their many joyous, loving memories.

'Shadows are fallin' and I'm runnin' out of breath,

Keep me in your heart for a while.

If I leave you it doesn't mean I love you any less,

Keep me in your heart for a while.'
