Joe Edward Warren, 79, of Lafayette, Colorado, passed away peacefully at home on February 3, 2024. He had lived with grace and courage since his ALS diagnosis in early 2021.
Joe was born on March 22, 1944 in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. He grew up in Rochester, New York after moving there as a child, graduating from Greece Olympia High School in 1962. He went on to study engineering at Purdue University, earning his PhD in 1970.
Joe and his wife, Nancy (Schmitt) met at Purdue University. They were married in September 1966 and had two daughters, Jennifer and Suzanne.
Joe worked for over thirty years in the telecommunications field, starting at Bell Labs in Indianapolis, Indiana. In 1983, he and his family moved to Fair Haven, New Jersey where he worked for Bell Labs in Holmdel. Joe was transferred to Colorado in 1996 and retired from Avaya in 2002.
Joe took up road cycling while living in Fair Haven. He joined a cycling club and spent many weekends out riding centuries with them. He participated in Ride the Rockies several times after moving to Colorado. He spent his retirement years working at Spero Winery and volunteering with the Rocky Mountain Porsche Club. He enjoyed working on his cars and participating in DEs at High Plains Raceway.
Joe will be remembered as a loving and supportive husband, father and grandfather. He will also be fondly remembered as a good colleague and supervisor, cultivating lifelong friendships throughout his career. Joe was still in touch with friends he had made at Purdue and along the way in Indiana, New Jersey and finally, in Colorado. Some of Joe's dearest friends, his "coffee buddies", started coming to the house for their weekly visits once he could no longer meet them at Starbucks. He looked forward to those visits and treasured that time spent together.
Joe was predeceased by his parents, Glynn and Rose Warren and his daughter, Suzanne.
He is survived by his wife, Nancy, daughter, Jennifer (Chris) Garrity of Lincroft, New Jersey and four grandchildren, Paige, Kyle, Meghan and Kaeleigh.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his memory to the ALS United Rocky Mountain Chapter.
A viewing will be held on Friday, February 9, 2024 from 5:00 - 6:30 p.m. at In Memoriam Funeral Parlor, 7290 W 119th Place, Broomfield, CO 80020. The Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, February 10, 2024 at 10:00 p.m. at The Establishment located at 11885 Bradburn Blvd, Westminster, CO 80031.

I mentioned to my wife last night that I that I am frustrated with not finding many of my best friends from high school, including Joe. Google searches don't do well with such common names. Today my wife finds this obit much to my sadness. What is even sadder is to learn that we lived in Lafayette at the same time! So close. We could have relived so many memories. Joe was an Officer of the Porsche club when I first got involved. He was always very willing to help answer any questions I had and help get me the info I needed. When I was a "rookie" autocross race chairman, he really was helpful with sending me reminders of deadlines for the various things I needed to do months ahead of my event. And of course Nancy was the best Registrar for many many Porsche club events for quite a few years.

Joe also sold me his autocross tire trailer, which I pull behind my Boxster to events. I bet Nancy was glad to get that out of her garage! ha ha ha
The last time I saw Joe, he had grown his hair long and looked like an aging hippie. I thought he was going through a retirement phase, but I later learned he grew his hair long to donate it to Locks of Love for wigs of cancer victims. What a wonderful thing to do!
