Joe Whitaker 87, of Syracuse, New York passed away peacefully on Monday July 28, 2025 at St. Camillus Health and Rehabilitation Center. He was born on September 14, 1937, in Suffolk Virginia. He was a resident of Syracuse N.Y. since 1956. Joe retired from Carrier Corporation after 27 years of dedicated service. In retirement, he remained active by working at Bristol Myers and Le Moyne College. A man of many interests and talents, Joe enjoyed fishing, bowling, gardening, barbecuing, and sports. Above all, he cherished spending time with his family.
He was predeceased by his mother, Emma Johnson Herndon; and his wife, Laura A. Whitaker.
He leaves to cherish his memory his children, Vanessa Walker Holloman, Joe (Lurenza) Whitaker Jr, Laurae "Donnie" Whitaker Smith, Margaret "Peggy" Tearney, Nicole "Nikki" Cathcart, Candace "Candy" Cathcart; his stepchildren Carlton Cathcart, Tina Cathcart, Shirell Cathcart; siblings: Sidney Herndon, Thelma Reed, Regina Herndon, along with a host of cousins; grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.
Calling hours will be held on Friday, August 8th, from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at FARONE & SON, Inc. Funeral Home, 1500 Park Street, Syracuse, N.Y. 13208. A funeral service will follow at 12:00 p.m., with interment at Onondaga Valley Cemetery. All flowers should be sent directly to the funeral home day of service.
