Our Beloved Joel
Joel Scott Barbour was born on May 7, 1951, in Trenton, New Jersey, to Joseph Henry Barbour and Grace Margaret Barbour. He grew up with his sister, Gracie, on their family farm. Tragically, Joel's father passed away when he was incredibly young, and his mother contracted polio. Despite these challenges, Joel's mother was fearless; she would pack up their trailer every summer and take Joel and Gracie on adventures across the country, visiting numerous national parks. Joel shared that these experiences had a profound impact on him, instilling a sense of courage, independence, and confidence in taking risks. He was exposed to a wide variety of people and situations during these travels.
Joel and Gracie eventually took on the responsibility of household chores and helped each other run the on-site bed and breakfast. Their family eventually moved to California.
Joel attended Inglewood High School in Los Angeles, where he often reminisced about being classmates with members of The Beach Boys. Joel soon became a father and welcomed his son, Corey Jason Barbour, into the world. Two years later, he welcomed his daughter, Christine Lynn Barbour.
On September 3, 1977, Joel married the love of his life, Connie. They met through mutual friends and quickly realized they could not live without each other. Connie had a son named Dennis, whom Joel adopted as his own; they blended their families together.
Joel followed a diverse career path, gaining valuable experience as a truck driver, backhoe operator, and wireline operator. With a wealth of knowledge and a vision in his heart, he partnered with Connie to establish their own water well business, Barbour Well Surveying Corporation. Together, they worked tirelessly to bring their dreams to life. Joel and Connie's success stemmed from their complementary skills and talents, which made them true partners. Joel was the creative visionary, while Connie was the practical, meticulous partner who ensured their business remained financially sound. They found purpose in knowing they were providing skilled training and opportunities to those in their community. Their hard work and dedication led to a successful business and created a lasting legacy that filled Joel with immense pride.
Joel was an inventor and entrepreneur at heart, a talent he inherited from his father. Throughout his career, he developed numerous innovations and held several patents. His enterprising spirit was complemented by his passions for shooting, tennis, swimming, fishing, and boating. Those with the privilege of boating with Joel knew they were in for a treat when he offered to tow them on the tube. Many friends and family created cherished memories with Joel and Connie on the lake.
Alongside managing the family business, Joel cherished moments with Connie and their family, taking numerous Caribbean cruise vacations. Many of their fondest memories were created on the open waters.
Joel had a profound love for animals and found joy in the companionship of his pets. He especially cherished his cats-Pumpkin, Fernando, Deidra, Mojo, and his beloved George-and his dog, Rufus.
In June 2009, Joel and Connie relocated their business to Henderson, Nevada. They quickly adapted to their new home and continued to grow their successful business. Over time, their children joined them and made Nevada their home.
Unfortunately, Joel began to struggle with several chronic illnesses. Connie cared for him continuously, rarely leaving his side. On Tuesday, March 25th, Joel passed away peacefully with family by his side. His beloved wife, Connie, had passed just a few days earlier and was waiting for their heavenly reunion. They had been married for 47 years.
Joel was preceded in death by his wife, Connie; his mother, Grace; his father, Joseph; his sister, Gracie; and his aunt, Gladys. He is survived by his children, Corey, Christine, and Dennis (Christy); his grandchildren, Travis, Kellie, Christopher, and Hailey; and his nephew, Michael.
Joel will be laid to rest beside the love of his life, Connie, on April 26, 2025, at Conejo Mountain Memorial Park. A private viewing for the family will take place at 11:00 AM. The funeral service will begin at noon, followed by a graveside service at 1:00 PM. A reception will immediately follow at Conejo Mountain Memorial Park.
Joel is deeply loved and greatly missed.
John 14:1-3
"Don't let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God, and trust also in me. There is more than enough room in my Father's home. If this were not so, would I have told you that I am going to prepare a place for you? When everything is ready, I will come and get you, so that you will always be with me where I am. And you know the way to where I am going."
