Joel Gordon Mills, a cherished husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on April 18, 2025, at the age of 77, in Grand Rapids, MI. Joel was born in Traverse City, MI, on June 6, 1947, and is preceded in death by his father, Melvin Mills, and his mother, Ethelyn Brainard Mills.
Joel proudly served his country as a member of the Navy from 1965 to 1968, an experience that instilled in him a profound sense of duty and camaraderie.
He met the love of his life, Claudia, and together they built a family that became Joel's pride and joy. He is survived by his devoted spouse, Claudia Kent Mills; his children, Kelly Teft, Katie Dean, Rob Richardson (spouse Tara), Shannon Richardson (spouse Brent), and Josh Richardson (spouse Jenny); his adored grandchildren, Braydon Teft (spouse Libby), Ethan Dean, Austin Dean, Mollie Dean, Riley Teft, Alexander Richardson, Henry Richardson, Logan Richardson, and Everett Richardson; great grandson, Marshall Teft, as well as his sister and two brothers. Each family member carries a piece of Joel's legacy within them, from his wisdom to his playful spirit.
Joel will be most fondly remembered for his love of singing. He was a member of the Great Lakes Barbershop Chorus and the Pioneer District of the International Barbershop Harmony Society, and a member of various quartets through the years, including District Champions Touch of Clash. His voice resonated not just in the harmonies he created but also in the hearts he touched through his performances.
We will gather for an informal Celebration of Life on Wednesday, May 7, 2025, from 4:00 pm - 7:00 pm at Third Reformed Church, 2060 Michigan Ave NE, Grand Rapids, MI 49503 To send flowers to the family or plant a tree in memory of Joel, please visit our floral store.
